Velvet: If you fill his head with any more garbage, I’m eating both of you. Velvet: (interjecting) Don’t put any weird ideas into Laphicet’s head, you two. Laphicet: Beware tears… and guard myself. Rokurou: The wounds a women leave on a man’s heart take longer to heal than a cut delivered by a sword.Įizen: Beware a maiden’s tears, boy, and guard yourself well. Laphicet: …Sounds like you’ve both been through some hard times. They lie as easily as they breathe, and men can never see through their deceptions. Rokurou: That’s an age-old problem for men. Laphicet: I was told that women’s looks can be deceiving, but I’m not sure what I’m supposed to see… Here’s a transcript of the convo, should you be interested: The conversation that followed showed banter between the 6 main characters - Eizen the brooding male pirate, Laphicet the boy child of light, Rokurou the demon samurai man, Magilou the lady magician, Eleanor the pure and holy maiden, and female playable character Velvet - with the older boys explaining to the child how women deceive men with their wicked tricks of lies and tears. at this stage I knew nothing of the characters who they were, how many were there, what their relationships were. Having never played a Tales game, I was excited to jump in - until the very first conversation between the party characters played out. My problems started back in 2016 when I first played the demo. As the title suggests, it feels like like even though the game is equal in male/female distribution in general, there’s something gross underneath. Eleanor, much like Laphicet, represents to Velvet ideas of friends, family, and home.As much as I’ve been enjoying my latest JRPG anime ass nonsense game, I’ve been struggling with something internally that I just need to talk about. I think the connection here is somewhat similar to a connection between malak-Laphicet and brother-Laphicet: they look just similar enough for Velvet to form the connection in her head and be reminded of a happier time.

Eleanor bears some resemblance to Niko, Velvet's childhood friend who Velvet low-key wanted to marry. I always remember the skit in which Eleanor tries to spy on Velvet and just ends up getting distracted and flustered thinking about her and is then accidentally friendly to her.Ĥ. They wanted to hate each other but couldn't bring themselves to. They essentially became his two moms, and bonded over their mutual desire to care for the child.ģ. Eleanor took a more active role on raising Laphicet than anyone other than Velvet. Eleanor is a very good influence on Velvet and Velvet is a surprisingly good influence on Eleanor.Ģ. And so while they often clash they are able to relate to each other enough to each learn from the other's perspective.

They are not total opposites, more like twisted reflections of each other either could have easily turned out like the other if certain events in their lives had been different.

Eleanor is Velvet's ultimate character foil and vice versa. Personally I think Veleanor makes more sense for a number of reasons.ġ. I see most people shipping Velvet with either Eleanor or Magilou and was wondering which side has more support.
